Shalfleet Parish Council News March 2020

A Meeting was held on March 12th

Coronavirus:  Basic precautions were taken at the meeting, which was held in Newbridge Community Centre. Coronavirus was discussed and decisions regarding future meetings will be taken in the light of events.

V.E. Day Celebrations: The Parish Council is supporting the Wellow Millennium Green Committee. The committee has planned to celebrate the event on May 8th. It is likely that the plans will have to be modified in the light of the pandemic.

Booklet: The parish council is financing the printing of a booklet that commemorates the men from Shalfleet who died during the 1939-45 War. The booklet will be gifted to the parish.

Withyfield, Shalfleet:  A new wooden bridge (Isle of Wight Council) has been installed. New fencing has also been erected (Parish Council).

Hedge: Members of the public have drawn attention to the removal of hedges in both Wellow and Ningwood. The matter has been referred to the appropriate County authority.

Layby at Shalfleet: The parish council recently instigated the removal of a large mobile advertising hoarding from the layby near Shalfleet House. Sadly, a large section of the layby is, once again, being denied to the public because a van advertising tyres is occupying much of the space.

Enforcement: There are sometimes attempts to erect structures without obtaining planning consent.  When reported, such developments are investigated. At the moment one enforcement notice has been served within the parish.

Community Centre, Newbridge: There was some discussion regarding the future of the Community Centre. This has an impact on the parish council office, which is based within the building.

Burt Close:  On April 24th two parish councillors will attend the formal opening of Burt Close.  Bob Seely M.P. will attend.  There was also some general discussion regarding the need for more social housing in the parish. Various views were expressed.

Bus Shelters: The bus shelter at Bouldnor has been replaced with a new one. The bus shelter at Wellow has been decorated and the old Air Raid Wardens shelter at Wellow is to be refurbished.

Fleetway Green: Southern Water are working in the area and vehicles are parked on the Green. The Green will be restored when the work has been finished. The Green is currently owned by the IWC. The Parish Council are looking into Leasing the Green from IWC.
